Free Wi-Fi is provided to the public in Hangzhou from 30 October on, which means Hangzhou is the first city in China to provide free Wi-Fi to its residents and visitors home and abroad.

If you’re outdoors at the moment, just search for i-hangzhou with your mobile phone. Once it’s linked, you’re on the internet. The signal i-hangzhou is named as its homophone in Chinese meaning “love Hangzhou”.

Some people had a test around Landison Hotel and other streets in the neighbourhood that day, and the result turned out to be really satisfactory. Signals were strong and the link to the internet was very fast. However, once got indoors, the mobile phones were disconnected. There was no signal at the crossing of Yan’an Road and Tiyuchang Road, either.

The coverage of free outdoor Wi-Fi includes major city streets, blocks, scenic spots, squares, bus stops, public transport interchanges etc. For more detailed locations please log on the official website of Hangzhou Economic & IT Commission.

At present, over 2,000 hot spots have been deployed over the CBD area covering about 220 square kilometres by the service provider Huashu Company. The closer to the hot spot, the stronger the signal and the faster of the internet speed will be.

However there are some blind spots where no i-hangzhou signal can be found. Major roads like the east driveway and west driveway of Wulin Square, Yan’an Road and Qiutao Road are not covered by Wi-Fi at this stage due to the roadworks for the subway. Huashu Company will look into it once the construction is completed.

Mr. Zhao Zhifeng, Deputy President of Huashu Company said that over 3,000 hot spots will be installed by the end of 2013. Their objective is to have 100% coverage of free outdoor Wi-Fi in every corner of CBD Hangzhou.

In order to uplift the development and application of the information technology in the con

struction of a city, the municipal government made the decision to provide free outdoor Wi-Fi in Hangzhou.

The free Wi-Fi network in Hangzhou started from 2007, it was finished by this autumn after almost five years' construction. The launching ceremony was held in Landison Hotel on 30 Oct. Mayor of Hangzhou Mr. Shao Zhanwei announced the official release of free outdoor Wi-Fi in Hangzhou for all the residents and visitors.

Before long you can log on the internet with your laptop as well as smart phones.

Winter at the Door in Hangzhou

Thick clothes needed

on chilly mornings and evenings

下周立冬 出门穿件厚衣服

Reported by Gu Yi

Cold spell that has been “rested” for the whole summer is now becoming more and more active. It will play the major role in the next few months. Even though it’s still about one month away from winter, it will be the Beginning of Winter on 3 Nov according to the lunar calendar. Traditionally the locals will celebrate the Beginning of Winter with a hot poultry stew as a winter warmer.

This week from Wednesday, dominated by cold high pressure, it was sunny in Hangzhou but the lowest temperature dropped below 10℃. You’re reminded to bring thick clothes with you as it can be very chilly in the morning and evening.

The influence of the cold spell will continue to this weekend. The temperature in hills area will go down to as low as 5℃ and 6-9 degree in other regions. On the evening of 3 Nov showers with temperature drop are expected across the province.

As this is very close to the temperature in winter, people in the northeast hills area may need to wear winter clothes already. For the seniors please be cautious if you are still doing your morning exercise outdoors.

Many people have a better appetite in colder days but still try to be on a diet. It’s more important to eat healthily. Fresh vegetables, fruits as well as seafood are always the best choice.(Translated by E.C. Hick)
