2026年日本《防卫白皮书》中披露，日本将宇宙作战群升格为独立宇宙作战集团。2020年日本组建了两支人数仅为20人的宇宙作战队，职能仅负责卫星观测；2022年，扩至310人的“宇宙作战群”，职能初步具备了可追踪太空目标。六年后，再次扩编至880人。目前，日本把集体自卫权延伸至太空，常态化参与美军“太空旗”联合军演。有学者表示，通过发展外太空，日本欲实现弯道超车。
